Phase 1 - Market & Business Intelligence
Purpose
Before defining Rundown's positioning, products, sales process or website, we must first understand how businesses operate, how they make decisions and where Rundown creates value.
Most agencies begin by defining their services.
Rundown begins by understanding the businesses it intends to serve.
The purpose of this phase is to establish the strategic foundation upon which every future decision will be made. Rather than building the agency around trends, assumptions or competitor behaviour, this phase focuses on identifying timeless business principles that remain true regardless of industry or technology.
The output of this phase is not a collection of research notes. It is a set of validated strategic decisions that define:
- When businesses seek outside help.
- Why businesses invest in agencies.
- How businesses evaluate partners.
- Which problems Rundown exists to solve.
- Which problems Rundown deliberately does not solve.
- The operating principles that guide every future decision.
Every subsequent phase of the Playbook builds upon the conclusions documented here.
Executive Summary
Through research, first-principles thinking and repeated validation, Rundown reached several conclusions that fundamentally shape how the company operates.
Businesses rarely invest in websites, branding or digital assets simply because they want something new. They invest because their business has evolved and their existing communication no longer supports where the business is today or where it intends to go.
Growth creates new expectations.
As businesses expand, communication, credibility and digital presence often fail to keep pace with operational growth. This creates constraints that reduce trust, slow sales and limit future growth.
Rundown exists to identify and reduce these constraints.
Rather than beginning with deliverables, Rundown begins with diagnosis. Every engagement starts by understanding the business, identifying the constraint that is limiting progress and determining whether Rundown is the right partner to solve that problem.
This philosophy influences every aspect of the company.
Products are designed around business problems rather than deliverables.
Sales conversations begin with understanding the business rather than discussing features.
Websites communicate clarity before creativity.
Execution always follows strategic understanding.
The purpose of Phase 1 is therefore not to define what Rundown builds.
It is to define how Rundown thinks.
Outcomes of Phase 1
By the end of this phase, Rundown has established:
- A clear understanding of why businesses seek external partners.
- A framework for identifying business constraints before recommending solutions.
- A practical understanding of buyer psychology and agency selection.
- Strategic boundaries defining what Rundown owns and what it deliberately does not own.
- The first version of the Rundown Doctrine.
- A strategic foundation for Positioning, Productization, Sales and Website Strategy.
These decisions become mandatory inputs for every future phase of the Playbook.
Rundown Decision
Every strategic decision made by Rundown must be consistent with the principles established in Phase 1.
Future phases are expected to apply these principles rather than redefine them.
